Our Mission

Appetite For Change is a nonprofit that uses food as a tool to build health, wealth, and social change in North Minneapolis. We bring people together to learn, cook, eat, and grow food, creating change that lasts.

Food is a key ingredient to nourishing well-being, but systemic barriers in North Minneapolis make fresh food access a challenge for many. Our programs are all based around a goal of creating health equity and eliminating health disparities in our home community of North Minneapolis and as a model for engaging and elevating all Black communities.

We are a community-led organization that strengthens families, creates economic prosperity, and encourages healthy living.

Our programs are led by people in our community. We listen to our youth and let them lead. We are a dedicated team of educators, growers, guides, and leaders who bring a variety of flavors to our table. Together, we use our skills and passions to enact positive change for everyone in the North Minneapolis community and beyond.

We grow food, leaders, and communities. We are who we’ve been waiting for and together we create change.

Our Programs

Youth Training & Opportunities

Program (YTOP)

YTOP is designed to develop our youth's social and emotional wellbeing and provide leadership development opportunities. With several training programs and employment opportunities, participants develop their leadership skills while learning and participating in hands-on urban farming, culinary, community organizing, and job readiness training. We offer the resources for young people to become agents of change in North Minneapolis.

Community Cooks

Workshops

AFC's flagship program, offered since our opening: Participants prepare and eat healthy meals together, learn about nutrition and engage in group discussions regarding social change. We offer youth, community members, and new or expecting mothers a space to explore preparing and enjoying new ingredients and nutritious recipes. Check out our events calendar for upcoming workshop dates.

Community Cooks

Meal Boxes

We bring the workshop home, delivering locally-sourced ingredients, fresh recipes, and cooking tips to over a hundred households every week. We collaborate with other programs to highlight fresh and local produce + proteins; recipe cards, educational information and ongoing cooking and culinary support that guides families through simple preparations and food skill development with an eye toward accessibility.

Urban

Agriculture

We grow thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables each year, improving the long-term health of our land, our residents, and our community by reconnecting with sustainable agricultural practices. Youth are involved in all aspects of the process: they plant seeds, tend the plots, harvest produce, and work with AFC to get produce into community members’ hands through farm stands, food shelves, and collaborations with other programs.
