Growing Food, Youth Leaders, and Community

at Northside Urban Farms

AFC’s urban ag plots throughout North Minneapolis are growing nutrient dense food year-round, using low-till, sustainable, organic growing techniques. Our plots are maintained using regenerative practices, and we never use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. We grow over 50 varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs, and medicinal plants, including over 7,500 pounds of produce in 2023!

Community-Owned Food Systems

Rooted in Sustainability

Our biggest focus is getting produce into the hands of our community! We partner with food banks, utilize our produce in our Community Cooks Workshops and Community Cooks Meal Boxes programs, sell produce to local restaurants, and distribute even more at youth-staffed farm stands. Our youth are heavily involved with every part of our urban farming operations: planting, tending, harvesting, washing, and distributing!

Our Deep Winter

Greenhouse

Our passive solar greenhouse uses energy from the sun to heat the greenhouse through winter and extend our growing season! A longer season provides North Minneapolis with year-round access to fresh, local produce, plus space to research and grow seedlings, herbs, and other medicinal plants. Having this space also allows us to continue our farm-centered youth work even after the typical growing season comes to an end.

Over 7,700 Pounds of Produce Grown in 2023!
